Comets announce 2023-24 technical staff

by Nathan Dunn

The Kansas City Comets are delighted to welcome four new members to the technical staff for the 2023-24 season.

Coming to the aid of head coach Stefan Stokic will be assistant coaches Kye Martey and Matt Gordon as well as sports performance coaches Lainey Horn and Jason Belz. Alan and Kenny Mayer will continue working with the goalkeepers while Shawn Dumers will continue as the head athletic trainer with Timothy and Angela Hasting serving as equipment managers.

Entering his first season as Comets head coach, Stokic understood the importance of surrounding himself with people he trusted. Martey and Gordon are both coaches he can rely on.

"They both have different skill sets that will help us improve," Stokic said. "They will help us in the locker room, the organizational side and the training sessions to prepare us for each game."

Martey joins the Comets after gaining experience coaching various levels of soccer from youth to collegiate levels. He has served as Alliance Futbol Club’s executive director since 2020.

Gordon joins the Comets coaching staff as a U.S. Soccer Grassroots License Instructor. He holds a USSF A coaching license and serves as KC Athletics Soccer Club's director of championship teams and camps.

Horn and Belz join the technical staff in partnership with A Greater You Performance Training as sports performance coaches. They will coordinate specialized programs for the team to remain fit throughout the season.

"They will be helping with fitness and conditioning both in the regular season and offseason," Stokic said. "It's a big deal to bring them on and have them part of our staff so they can help us to reach our full potential."

The technical staff is counting down the days until the home opener on November 26 against the Milwaukee Wave. In the meantime, they will stay busy this weekend when they visit Utica, New York to coach and evaluate players at the MASL Pro Player Combine before making selections in Sunday's MASL Combine Draft.
