Comets Indoor Soccer

KANSAS CITY (Feb. 28, 2017) – The Kansas City Comets performance on Sunday, when they clinched their third straight regular season Central Division title with a 10-3 victory over the Cedar Rapids Rampage, did not go unnoticed around the rest of the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL). The MASL announced the Week 18 Team of the Week this afternoon, including midfielder Vahid Assadpour and goalkeeper Stephen Paterson.

The Comets strong defense has been the power behind most of the Comets’ success this season, but thanks to the efforts of players like Assadpour, the team has really shown their offensive side in recent weeks. The team captain and midfielder scored four goals and added an assist to his tally on Sunday.

Goalkeeper Stephen Paterson was an unknown around the league prior to this season. He had seen action in three games to that point, but wasn’t tested in any of them. After the season he’s put together, everyone in the league now knows and has to gameplan for him. On Sunday he only allowed three goals to Cedar Rapids, then in the fourth quarter added a goal of his own to the score sheet.

With Paterson’s fourth quarter rocket to the back of the Cedar Rapids net, he became the first goalkeeper in the history of professional arena soccer to score two goals and record a shutout in the same season.

Kansas City is idle this weekend as they prepare for the Central Division Championships. Game One will be played at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena on March 9th at 7:35 p.m. CT. Game Two will be at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena on March 12th at 2:05 p.m. CT.
