Kansas City Comets

KANSAS CITY (Feb. 3, 2017) – The Kansas City Comets (11-4) head east on I-70 this weekend to face long-time rivals, the St. Louis Ambush (1-14) on Saturday, February 4th at 7:05 p.m. CT. This is the third match between the Comets and the Ambush, with Kansas City winning both previous matchups.

The Comets come into this game riding a six-game winning streak, while the Ambush have dropped their previous nine games. The streak began for the Comets on New Year’s Eve, the last time the team played in St. Louis. Leo Gibson led the team in that one with two goals and two assists. He has racked up eight total goals and five assists during the streak.

There have been plenty of other contributors as well. Just last week against the Florida Tropics, Ramone Palmer scored a goal and had four assists. Previous to that, defender Alain Matingou scored a hat trick and a game winning goal against San Diego.

Most impressively, the Comets have managed the league’s longest current win streak while playing all but one on the road.

The Ambush are led by defender Richard Schmermund. He has eight goals and two assists. Midfielder Cory Adamson follow behind him with six goals and one assist. The roster is filled with young players who have been developing and learning the indoor game throughout the season.

While, on paper, this is a game Kansas City should win, the Comets are not looking past their opponents.

“This is a rivalry, and everyone gets up for rivalry games,” said head coach Goran Karadzov. “They have a great crowd and they beat us last year when we maybe took them a little lighter than we should have. We need to make sure we play hard and do what we know we can to keep our streak alive.”

This week Karadzov was named the Major Arena Soccer League Coach of the month for January. He has his team firing, playing hard and believing they can win every game.

Team captain Vahid Assadpour said, “We’ve been playing good and in every game we knew we had a chance if we kept playing to the end.”

Prior to the MASL match, the Ambush are hosting a Alumni Game between former St. Louis Steamers/Ambush players and former Kansas City Comets/Attack players. Among the players scheduled to appear for Kansas City are Kim Roentved, Gino Schiraldi and Jim Schwab.

Kickoff for the Alumni Game is 5:00 p.m. CT with the MASL game to follow at 7:05 p.m. CT. The Comets will be streaming highlights and behind the scenes footage of the Alumni Game on their Facebook page. The MASL match will be broadcast on MASLtv, the streaming home of the Major Arena Soccer League.
